Mayo credits Riveiro for Pirates turnaround

Former Kaizer Chiefs utility player Patrick Mayo says Jose Riveiro should be given all the credit for turning Orlando Pirates into the monster that they are today.

Like Mamelodi Sundowns, since the arrival of the Spaniard, the Buccaneers are once again one of the most feared clubs in the Premier Soccer League.

Following Wednesday's 2-0 away win over Cape Town City, they have increased their chances of finishing in a CAF Champions League spot.

With Riveiro at the helm, Pirates have now won three major trophies in less than two seasons.

"The arrival of this coach, Jose Riveiro, has completely changed Orlando Pirates," Mayo tells KickOff.

"What helped him a lot was to bring back the guys who were not getting game-time. A player who's been starved of game-time will always give his best because he is hungry.

"So, I believe the coach is the one who should be given credit here," he adds.

Mayo admits he was one of those who were sceptical after the soft-spoken mentor was announced as the new Pirates coach prior to the beginning of last season.

"To be honest, I never thought he would do so well at Pirates when he was announced as their new coach.

"Riveiro has proved himself in South Africa. We must also applaud the chairman of the club for not rushing to sack him.

"I liked what Pirates did by giving him enough chance. even if he fails, he will take the responsibility.

"The players are responding so well to Riveiro's tactics because they understand him well now, hence they are performing so well.

"If they can continue with their good form next season, our league is going to be tough next season.

"It will no longer be a one-team league like it is at the moment because also, the likes of Stellenbosch FC are becoming very competitive nowadays."
