How I Became A Goalkeeper - Innocent Mayoyo

In the latest edition of How I Became a Goalkeeper, legendary Orlando Pirates shot-stopper Innocent Mayoyo explains how a Kaizer Chiefs legend converted him into a goalkeeper.

"Joseph 'Skheshe' Mkhonza is the one who introduced me to goalkeeping. I'm talking about Siphiwe Mkhonza's father, I think it had to do with a missing keeper on the day of a match because, in the beginning, I was actually a striker.

"That was at Springs Home Sweepers, an amateur club owned by Skheshe.

"That's the guy who made me a keeper, he trained me to be a keeper. I think I was at the Under-11 or Under-13 level.

"Goalkeeping is something I enjoyed a lot because I had a talent for it from a young age."

"I admired Peta Bala'c growing up even my nickname was Peta Bala'c. What he brought to the country was this thing of being a modern goalkeeper. He was brilliant. He had all the goalkeeping basics.

"Remember those days 99% of our goalkeepers didn't have goalkeeper coaches. So, most people used their own knowledge."

"In today's times, I admire the games of Ronwen William from Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as Sipho Chaine from Orlando Pirates.

"What I like is that both of them don't concede much. As a goalkeeper, your first weapon should be organization, which will help you to avoid making saves.

"A good goalkeeper is not the one who makes a lot of saves but the one who can organize and make his defence stable.

"Abroad…I don't follow football from abroad that much. We can't compare South Africa and Europe because in South Africa professional football players are not even 500. And half of them are foreigners."
