Lane: We believed in a muti that Khoza gave us

In the latest edition of My Locker Room Secrets, Orlando Pirates legend Gavin Lane shares what used to take place inside the Buccaneer's change room.

The 56-year-old was in the thick of things when the Sea Robbers won the 1995 CAF Champions Cup.

Who's locker room are we in today?

"Gavin Lane's locker room. Many things happened in the Pirates change room while I was there."

Who was always late?

"Eddie Motale. He'd come to training and, just sit and lie on his back in his car.

"Naughty Mokoena would also come late. So those were the two latecomers in our changing room.

"They loved stopping and chatting or greeting each other. Motale would be busy telling his normal jokes while Naughty would be laughing nonstop, and because of that they would end up joining us for training very late."

Any interesting ritual before you played?

"I used to put my left sock on, then my right sock on, after that, I would put my left soccer boot on and then it would be my right soccer boot on.

"Other than that it was nothing, we believed in a muti that Irvin Khoza gave us (laughing)."

Who was the jokester?

"Bernard Lushozi. He played centre-back with me all the time. That one and Eddie Motale always got everyone in the team laughing."

Was it a muti change room?

"With the late Pirates team manager Lawrence Ngubane, definitely it was a muti change room."

Who was the singer?

"Teboho Moloi and all these youngsters, Bruce Ramokgadi and so on.

"I remember we once sang the 'Umshini Wami' struggle song. Then later on Eddie Motale came to me and said, do you know what you are singing?

"My response to him was, no I don't know but I can feel it's a nice song with a nice rhythm we are even clapping hands.

"Then Eddie started explaining, that the song means you must go and get a gun and start shooting every Boer you come across (laughing). I couldn't believe what I was hearing. But when you are part of the squad you must sing with the squad you know (laughing)."

Who was the best dressed?

"Etienne Nsunda and Okpara Williams, you know these foreigners. Nsunda he was always looking smart.

"When he had functions like prize-giving ceremonies he always looked proper. I don't know if it was the stuff they buy on the side of the road or what. But we all loved them. I remember we had a lot of them playing for us.

"Eddie Motale with his funny hat has to be the worst dressed. Eish, you know the story of his cut-off hat."

Rate the coach's team talk

"Mike Makaab thoroughly went through every training session, he came down like a Jose Mourinho type of guy.

"But the best I played under was Eddie Lewis. While at Giant Blackpool he was renowned as a great motivator."
