Makgaka: 'I don’t regret leaving Pirates'

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Collins Makgaka has opened up for the first time on why things didn't work out for him at the Buccaneers.

The 27-year-old joined the Buccaneers from Baroka FC in 2020 but saw his game time limited in midfield.

Makgaka requested to be released from his contract, and is now a free agent ahead of making a decision on his next move.

"I don't really know why things didn't work out at Pirates, maybe the style of play didn't suit me," Makgaka tells KickOff.

"Coach Jose (Riveiro) at first, did try to explain why I was not playing. He was just explaining how he wants me to play, in order to make the team.

"Actually, it was just during a training session, but after that, he never said anything to me again.

"The thing is, they want you to play the way they want you to play, and not be yourself.

"But in the end, you end up losing your identity and who you are as a player and only do what the coach wants.

"Actually, I don't regret leaving. Being on the bench is not a problem, but being completely out of the picture, it's frustrating.

"Mentally, you become not okay, you begin to ask yourself many questions."

Makgaka's trial at Stellenbosch FC did not produce any positive results as the Cape Town-based club decided against signing him.

"I've stopped training with Stellenbosch, I'm now in Johannesburg, I'm training on my own.

"I was told I do not fit into how they want to play and that they have signed other players.

"My first priority is the DStv Premiership, I am considering the Motsepe Foundation Championship also, but that will depend on the offers.

"I just want to play football; it's been a long time without playing. In three years, I have only played 24 games, and those were not full games.

"At 27, I still have a lot of football left in my legs, it's just that at some point, you end up doubting yourself if you are good enough.

"You end up asking yourself what is it that you need to do.

"I'm available, training alone and still searching. Also, I'm still waiting to hear from my agent."
