Pirates striker wanted back home

Eighteen months of frustrations at Orlando Pirates have left a Cameroonian striker who was at the 2022 FIFA World Cup a wanted man back at his former club.

Souaibou Marou arrived at Pirates in January 2023 straight after having been to Qatar with the Indomitable Lions with high hopes.

He had been named the 2022 Cameroon Footballer of the Year after scoring 21 goals in all competitions.

With the options on the table, which it was claimed included Standard Liege (Belgium), Arminia Bielefeld (Germany) and Clermont Foot (France), he settled for Pirates after they paid a transfer of USD200 000 (approx. R3,6 million) to Coton Sport.

Unfortunately, his time at Pirates has turned into a tragedy as he has lost his place in the national team.

Marou is nowhere near to the names that new head coach Marc Brys is considering for the World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde and Angola in June.

The 23-year-old has only played 150 minutes spread over nine appearances.

This has prompted his former club Coton Sport to raise their heads in closely following what will happen with Marou during the next transfer window.

The Cameroonian champions don't have the budget but have interest in getting their former marksman back ahead of another CAF Champions League campaign next season.

Coton Sport know just how much Marou needs to play football again after failing to win over Jose Riveiro at Pirates and are willing to give him that opportunity.

However, the decision will fall on the Soweto giants as the lanky forward still has a running contract with the club.

Options in the DStv Premiership will be thin for Marou considering that he hasn't been seen enough on the field on matchday.
