Maswanganyi reflects on 'amazing' Soweto Derby experience

Orlando Pirates attacker Patrick Maswanganyi has opened up about the experience of playing in his first Soweto Derby on Saturday.

A first-half goal by Evidence Makgopa was enough to hand the Buccaneers their first win over Chiefs in six matches that also ended their five-game losing run against their arch-rivals.

Maswanganyi says they did not play their normal game as Amakhosi were good at keeping the ball but they were happy to keep their defensive shape and got the win after an early goal.

"I think we managed to score our first chance in the game and we were very compact, it was very difficult for us to play. We didn't play like we used to play, Kaizer Chiefs is a very good team," Maswanganyi told SuperSport TV after receiving his Man of the Match award.

"I mean they came out strong, we also came out strong but they were a bit better than us in terms of keeping possession but we managed to keep our structure and we managed to get one goal and we're happy with the win."

The Buccaneers won back-to-back matches for the first time in the league this season and the former SuperSport United winger suggested that hopefully they can keep on winning.

"I think we wanted to start very well, we haven't started well. As you have seen we haven't won in terms of coming to four games not even winning a game, we managed to win a game during the week and now we win the second game against Kaizer Chiefs in a derby. It's very important for us to keep winning, especially to be consistent in our performance," he said.

Maswanganyi, who joined Pirates in the off-season from Matsatsantsa, played in his first competitive Soweto derby and said he was nervous at first.

"It's very amazing, I mean as you can see the crowd. I was a bit nervous when we started but as soon as you get used to the game, you enjoy the game and it's very fun playing in a stadium like this and I wanna play more in a stadium full like this," he added.
