My First Pay Cheque - Teboho Moloi

In this edition of My First Paycheque, KickOff catches up with Orlando Pirates legend Teboho Moloi.

Moloi served the Buccaneers with distinction both as a player and coach.

Who did you sign for?

"I signed for Orlando Pirates. It was 1987 I was from the Bopsol. It was a semi-professional league, and because I was still at school, I was not paid any salary.

"I started earning a salary at Pirates."

How much was it?

"It was R467.23 (laughs). My father was the one who was more in charge of my salaries and stuff.

"Until I retired Pirates never gave me a signing-on fee. And my salary has never been more than R10 000.

"But I'm very grateful because when I joined, they said to me, money is not an issue, Pirates will give you a platform to showcase your talent.

"Because I was able to make money out of endorsements. I survived through endorsements.

"Pirates gave me a platform to have so many sponsorships that I had as a footballer.

"The following year my salary at Pirates moved to R646.97.

"I started earning thousands in 1991 when Dr Irvin Khoza took over. That's when my salary moved to R3500 a month."

How I celebrated?

"The thing is I was still doing my matric. Imagine a school kid who carried a bank book from Standard Bank.

"I'm not coming from a well-off family, I'm coming from an average family where you would only get money if it was somebody's birthday.

"I spent the R467.23 buying stuff for my family. My grandmother loved cake.

"Things started to be better when Mr Khoza took over at Pirates. I was now older and did not have a father to look after me.

"I was now taking care of the family because, with the first pay cheque, I could only afford to spoil myself at school, and also bought some snacks for my grandparents."
