Ngubane: R100 000 Man of the Match prize embarrassing

South African football legend Mlungisi "Professor" Ngubane is dissatisfied with the criteria used to select the lucrative Man of the Match award in the Carling Knockout Cup.

There is an ongoing outcry against the criteria of allowing fans to vote for the best player in the cup competition's matches.

Ngubane accuses the method that is being used of turning the game into a popularity contest.

"They are just destroying players," Ngubane tells KickOff.

"They are claiming to be motivating the players with the R100 000, when in fact they are destroying the players with the R100 000.

"All the Man of the Matches that have won the votes so far, they don't deserve to win.

"Those who deserved to be awarded they didn't win. They go with names. That is not fair.

"There is no football fan who will choose a Man of the Match, they will always choose a player they like.

"When it comes to choosing a Man of the Match you need to be honest.

"Taariq Fielies from AmaZulu played his heart out, and yet he didn't get the Man of the Match.

"He was outstanding in that game, attacking and defending.

"Instead, the Man of the Match went to Keagan Dolly...what did he do for Kaizer Chiefs in that match? It's embarrassing.

"We are no longer motivating players, but we are destroying them. Even if I play well or not it's still the same, if I'm not popular I'm not going to get it. No matter how hard I work. That is unfair.

"Thembinkosi Lorch, Khanyisa Mayo...what did they do? They need to go back to the normal way of selecting a man of the match."
