Pirates urged to solve goal-scoring dilemma before season resumes

Orlando Pirates has been urged to solve their strikers dilemma before another encounter with Mamelodi Sundowns when the league resumes at the end of December.

With just nine goals scored so far this season, the Buccaneers are the fourth-lowest-scoring side in the DStv Premiership behind Marumo Gallants, TS Galaxy and Maritzburg United. This is despite starting the season with four strikers in the squad.

Eva Nga and Zakhele Lepasa have each scored once this season while Kwame Peprah and Evidence Makgopa are yet to find the back of the net.

"They [Pirates' technical staff] have to decide who is going lead the attack before the season resumes because so far it hasn't been clear. Fortunately, the defence and midfield have been very solid and given them a chance to  say in a good position on the log table," retired Pirates midfielder Shakes Gwabeni said.

After a poor start to the season in front of goal, Pirates reinforced their attacking line with the signing of Kermit Erasmus on transfer deadline day. The 32-year-old has contributed one goal and three assists in seven appearances.

The side has also been boosted by the emergence of Monnapule Saleng who has contributed five goals in eight appearances.

"I think the arrival of Erasmus has been a very positive addition and added a new dimension to the attack. Together with Saleng, they have improved the attack," added Gwabeni.

Orlando Pirates will meet a free-scoring Sundowns on 31 December on their return to DStv Premiership action.
