History hurdle for Riveiro at Pirates

Orlando Pirates' chase for the latest set of three points on Tuesday will come with reaching heights that have never been reached throughout the PSL era years.

Pirates will take any aim at maximum points when they welcome Richards Bay FC under floodlights at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday (19:30).

They will do so having already pocketed all 18 points that have been there to play for from the opening six league games.

This has meant Jose Riveiro's men have now matched the club's longest run of wins in the league since they played their first points contest in the PSL era years back on August 10, 1996, against Moroka Swallows.

Six victories in a row is the furthest that Pirates have ever stretched their run in matters relating to league wins having done so five times through their 870 league games in the PSL era.

The first time was under Roy Barreto when they won the opening six at the start of the 2002/03 season on the way to lifting the Castle Premiership title.

Rudi Krol did it again in 2011 on the way to the league title, Josef Zinnbauer matched it at the beginning of 2020 and then with Riveiro in March/April 2023.

Having repeated the feat, they now have the opportunity to go one better and become the first group to reach seven wins in a row against an opponent that they will now have to settle league matters with within the first seven games.

Pirates won 1-0 in Durban at the end of September, but Richards Bay were smiling on their last visit to Soweto in May with Sanele Barns scoring the goal which separated the two teams.

It will be interesting how the KwaZulu-Natal outfit plot against the energy of the young pair of Mohau Nkota and Relebohile Mofokeng as Pirates seek the 'golden' win number seven.

Tuesday's match is number 100 in charge of Pirates for Riveiro, who took over amid the usual doubts but has now won over those that dismissed him as being a 'plumber' when he arrived.

Bucs' participation in the CAF Champions League group stage is what has necessitated the reshuffling of their fixtures to an order that has them getting done with Richards Bay within the opening quarter of the league season.

There will be six matches to play in the group stage and trips to Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire and Egypt within seven weeks starting from the end of November.
