‘Pirates will play in the final or semis at worst’

Orlando Pirates have needed just a single match in the CAF Champions League to get the North Africans standing on their toes.

Pirates were the only club from Sub-Saharan Africa which went up to North Africa and came back with all three points on the opening day of the group stage after overcoming CR Belouizdad 2-1.

The Buccaneers could have won by a wider margin had they made better use of the avalanche of opportunities that they created.

Of all the other teams that travelled to North Africa, Djoliba (Mali) were hammered 4-0 by Esperance in Tunisia, Sagrada Esperanca (Angola) got a 5-1 hiding at Pyramids, while Al Ahly won 4-2 against Stade d'Abdijan (Cote d'Ivoire).

"I have to admit that Pirates look dangerous this season, which explains why they have won seven out of seven in their league," Algerian scout Herroug Abdemadjid tells KickOff.com.

"This team looks like they can beat anyone this season in the Champions League.

"What they did in the first half against CRB was amazing and got me really interested.

"They are very fast and effective when going forward and few teams enjoy playing against teams like that.

"They could have been 4-0 up in the first half had it not been for the great work done by the goalkeeper (Moustapha Zeghba) of CRB, who had many saves.

"This Pirates team will definitely play in the final this season or semi-final at worst along with Al Ahly and possibly Mamelodi Sundowns, who I also respect.

"Pirates made me watch some good football and I look forward to following them a lot more now," says Abdemadjid.

The Soweto giants also has received considerable interest in Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia after that opening day victory in Algeria.

They host Stellenbosch FC in the domestic league on Sunday, before the big clash against Al Ahly the following Saturday.
