Title-chasing Pirates blast pitch at Old Peter Mokaba

Title-chasing Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro cried foul over the disservice to football in favour of a music concert by musician Makhadzi after they almost dropped points in a 1-0 win over ten-man Magesi.

Pirates reduced the deficit behind leaders and rivals Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the Betway Premiership to just three points thanks to a stunning goal by Relebohile Mofokeng.

Ezimnyama entered the game with high expectations of goals after they walloped Marumo Gallants 8-1 on Christmas Eve.

However, The Buccaneers were somewhat fortunate to enter the interval with a 1-0 lead after Wonderboy Makhubo missed a penalty for Magesi just before the sides headed to the tunnel.

After the game, Riveiro suggested that on TV people would not realize how bad the pitch at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium was, after the encounter against Dikwena was moved to the stadium opposite the New Peter Mokaba Stadium at the 11th hour, which had a damaged surface due to Makhadzi's One Woman music festival.

The Spanish coach sarcastically lamented that the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium was not good enough for a music festival but was good enough for football.

"Important three points, massive in very difficult circumstances, probably people cannot appreciate how difficult it is to play football here, it's not a football pitch, I can say it now that we won," Riveiro said on SuperSport TV.

"Because I would not be complaining because of the result, it was tough for both teams, you can see the players when they finished, you have 15 players on their knees, that's how tough it is to play here.

"And it was not good enough for a concert a couple of weeks ago but it's good enough to play a football match and that's why I think the performance from both teams was not a good spectacle but like I said, we came here with the intention to get three points and we did it, massive result for us," Riveiro added.
