Pirates star hits out at Dzvukamanja critics

Orlando Pirates midfielder Fortune Makaringe has hit out at club supporters who jeered striker Terrence Dzvukamanja earlier in the season.

In perhaps one of the biggest turn-arounds of the 22/23 season, Dzvukamanja went from making a single appearance for the Sea Robbers in months, to emerging as the club's deadliest striker in front of goal.

The 29-year-old made just one appearance before the start of year and his future with the club in doubt. Such was the player so out of favour that he recalls receiving death threats.

"I was receiving death threats because they [disgruntled Pirates fans] didn't want me here. Last year, from September until December 2022," Dzvukamanja said via Pirates TV.

"They would come into my inboxes and even call me, I don't know how they got my number. But they would call me too.

"Even at the mall also, there was a time when I went to the mall, and someone told me to my face 'if you can't leave, we'll make you leave'.

His teammate, Makaringe, also recalls a heartbreaking incident at Orlando Stadium.

"I remember a game we played at Orlando Stadium. During the game, Kermit Erasmus got injured. Dzvuka stood up to warm up, and fans started booing him," Makaringe said.

"That hurt me. I was sitting up there [in the players' lounge]. I asked myself 'what type of people are these?' how can you boo one of your own?"

The turn of the year, came with a turn of fortunes for the striker. Dzvukamanja scored against Golden Arrows mid-January, in only his second appearance for the season.

Since them, the Zimbabwean attacker has scored seven more goals in 18 appearances and provided two assists across all competitions.
