'Pirates should advance if...'

A former PSL star who has featured for both Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United has revealed the one key factor that will make Jose Riveiro's men progress to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.

The quarterfinal match will be held at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, where Pirates are expected to dominate both on the field and in the stands.

Ronnie Zondi, a former steely centre-back who represented both sides with distinction in his playing career, predicts an intriguing game as both have shown inconsistency in performance.

"SuperSport United have not been doing well for quite some time. While they had one good result against Kaizer Chiefs, the rest have been marked by inconsistency," he says.

"However, if you evaluate their performance against Chiefs, there are signs that they can be competitive."

On Pirates' side, Zondi notes they are 'victims of their own success'.

"When you expect them to perform well, they often falter. Like SuperSport, Pirates also struggle with inconsistency.

"Additionally, there is the matter of opportunities being given to younger players by coach Jose Riveiro. I'm not sure how much this will affect their performance on Saturday.

"However, if they field a strong team, they should advance past SuperSport."

Zondi predicts the win to go the way of the Soweto giants but emphasizes it won't be easy.

The visitors will be without Nkosinathi Sibisi, while Matsatsantsa will enter the cup tie without their suspended coach, Gavin Hunt.

"This will impact the game, as Sibisi is very influential in defence. However, Pirates do have depth in their squad. It all depends on whether those who come in can seize the opportunity.

"Sometimes it seems these players pick and choose their performances. It's all about mindset and commitment," adds Zondi.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
