Orlando Pirates have released a statement following a video circulating on social media involving their players animatedly discussing betting on the result of an English Premier League match.
In the video, which was taken inside the Soweto giants' dressing room, goalkeeper Sipho Chaine is seen and heard suggesting he would betting on the result of the EPL match between Manchester United and Arsenal, which was played last Sunday and eventually won 1-0 by the Gunners to keep their league championship hopes alive.

"12 May, half past five, Old Trafford, straight win, 600 [rands]," he says, in part.
Prior to that, another member of the team, who is out of sight in the video and cannot be confirmed to be a player, is heard saying, "Sipho, bet now. I want you to bet now on that."
Another one, also out of sight, chips in: "Man United, over 2.5 [goals]."
The video was met with uproar in the public domain, with questions about limitations for players on betting and whether this does not compromise their and their clubs' integrity.
FULL STATEMENT:
"The Club has noted a video circulating on social media involving two of our players discussing betting.
We would like to clarify that the players in the video did not place any bets. The video captured a light-hearted moment among teammates purporting to have placed a bet on an English Premiership match.
As a Club, we are fully aware of the regulations regarding betting. Betting on any sport is strictly prohibited for any professional player.
However, we have addressed the matter with the players involved, emphasising that even in jest, such discussions can have serious implications.
The Club has reiterated the importance of adhering to betting regulations to avoid any potential long-term consequences.

The players recognise their error in judgment and have since apologised. However, due to the seriousness of this matter, the Club has instituted its own internal investigation to ensure that no player is involved in any form of sports betting as this would constitute a breach in the club handbook that all players are signatory to."
