Pirates star issues apology after shock result

Defender Tapelo Xoki issued an apology to club supporters following Orlando Pirates' surprise Carling Knockout defeat against Richards Bay.

The Buccaneers were sent crashing out of the Carling Knockout by The Natal Richboys when they lost a 5-4 penalty shootout after playing to a goalless draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking to the club's media after the match, Xoki, who wore the captain's armband on the day, apologised and assured supporters that team would bounce back.

"We are very disappointed, we gave it our all. No regrets whatsoever," Xoki said.

"We tried to win the game. We created chances.  We tried by all means to win the game. It was not our day and football sometimes deals you with such moments.

"It's now in us to get back up, dust ourselves up and finished the season, we have an upcoming game on Tuesday so there is no time to dwell on this one.

"Disappointing yes, we apologise to our supporters, to everyone involved with the institution but we will pick ourselves up and make sure we go forward with a positive mindset.

The loss was a fourth consecutive match that Pirates failed to win. Additionally, The Sea Robbers have scored just three goals in their last four matches across all competitions.

Pirates sit 13th on the DStv Premiership log table and have a chance to climb up when they host Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday. Kick-off is at 19:30.
