Pirates told not to cut their R10m losses on Gilberto yet

Orlando Pirates attacker Gilberto has been challenged by his countryman after a slow start to life at the Soweto giants.

Gilberto was billed as a marquee signing for Pirates in the off-season, after he was acquired for a reported R10 million from Petro de Luanda.

There were high expectations set, especially after he impressed during the pre-season tour of Spain against formidable opposition.

However, the 23-year-old has made only one league start and one in the CAF Champions League, with his other five appearances coming off the bench in all competitions.

When given a chance, the Angolan, who was also reportedly on the radar of Mamelodi Sundowns before Bucs secured his signature, has not shown why he was so highly rated for Petro last season, that he attracted the big clubs in the country.

Pirates have had a flying start to their Betway Premiership campaign, being the only side yet to drop points with seven wins from as many matches.

And so, head coach Jose Riveiro cannot be expected to tamper with his winning team.

A former teammate of Gilberto at Petro suggests that the Buccaneers need to be patient with the nimble-footed star, as he can produce wonders at any moment but can also be vulnerable to the worst displays, in his first experience out of Angola.

"Pirates is different compared to Kaizer Chiefs," a source at Petro told KickOff.com, comparing Gilberto to his countryman Inacio Miguel, who has already settled at Kaizer Chiefs.

"They have stability. For a player like Gilberto, he needs time to fit into Pirates' mentality.

"The train is already in the rails, the train is already gone, he must run to catch it. But with Gilberto, you never know. He's capable of the best and also capable of the worst, so you never know. He needs patience," the source added.

In Gilberto's position, Riveiro has tried youngster Mohau Nkota, who has hit the ground running with two goals in six games.
