Riveiro's league worries as he seeks to avoid blemish

Orlando Pirates will travel to out-of-sorts Cape Town Spurs favoured to collect three points on Wednesday, yet also having Jose Riveiro keen to avoid putting a blemish to his reign at the club.

While Riveiro has been cruising in the domestic knockout competitions with three trophies already delivered, the Spaniard has concerns in the league.

As Pirates go through their catch-up business in the league, they have been poor with only two wins from seven games which has left down in thirteenth.

Though the MTN8 was delivered in recent weeks along with progression to the next round of the Carling Cup, there has been worries with the Bucs' league form.

Pirates are now without a win in three league games following defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns and the two draws against AmaZulu and Polokwane City.

Since Riveiro arrived at Pirates, three games have been the most that the club has gone without a win in the league.

Last season, Bucs lost to Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Cape Town City in consecutive matches having also failed to win against Sekhukhune United, Richards Bay and AmaZulu earlier on.

This means Riveiro has not had a winless run stretching four games in the league, which is why the match against Spurs is of such significance.

The last time Pirates went four league games without a win was under Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids at the start of the 2021/22 season when they failed to pick up a win against Sundowns, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United, and Royal AM.

Wednesday's match against Spurs is the third that Pirates will play within nine days having played AmaZulu and Polokwane City since Tuesday last week (November 24).

After the game against on Wednesday, Pirates have another trip back to Durban to play Richards Bay in the Carling Knockout Cup on Saturday after which they host Sekhukhune United before facing Kaizer Chiefs on November 11.
