Title bells signals for Pirates...

The last time Orlando Pirates recorded four wins from their opening four league matches, there was a league title delivered at the end of that campaign.

This is what the Ghost will be hoping for after putting together four consecutive wins in the new season to set the early pace along with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Having last won the league in 2012, the league title is what the Buccaneers have as the priority this term.

At the start of the successful 2002/03 campaign, they were 1-0 winners over Manning Rangers in their first league match of the Castle Premiership with Hleza Mofedi on target.

It was a league season that only started on October 23, 2002, for Pirates – two months after Dynamos and Rangers played the season's first match.

Bucs' second triumph was over Mamelodi Sundowns (2-0) courtesy of goals from Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi and Lesley Manyathela with the pair on target again in the wins against Hellenic (2-0) and Black Leopards (3-1).

Roy Barreto was the man in charge and all those four games were played at home in the days when they used Johannesburg Stadium with the PAM Brink Stadium in Springs as an alternative.

The fifth win came away at Ajax Cape Town (3-0) with goals from Mofedi, Sibusiso Mazibuko and Manyathela.

Victory number six was on a 2-0 scoreline over Dynamos.

Lucky Lekgwathi and Boitumelo Moleyane were on target late in the game, before Gift Leremi was sent off.

The Soweto giants were then stopped by Wits University in the seventh league match, but they already had a third of the points that they needed to win that 2002/03 league title in the first season that the domestic league was down to 16 teams from 18.

Pirates ultimately won the league with a game to spare after a 1-1 draw against Wits at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.

Mbulelo 'Old John' Mabizela captained the side and then immediately left for Tottenham Hotspur.
