Where Pirates were last season at this stage

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro prefers to look at his progress at the club, especially this season, rather than obsess about the gap behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates will lock horns with Sundowns in the Betway Premiership on Sunday, 18 points behind their rivals, although with four games in hand.

Should they beat the visitors at FNB Stadium and win all their games in hand, provided the latter don't drop points until they catch up, they would be three points adrift.

Compared to last season at this stage, Jose Riveiro's charges were fourth on the log with 27 points after 18 matches, meaning they have improved by 13 points.

That is what the Spaniard would rather invest his focus on.

"One of the best teams in Pirates history. It's up to you if you want to look at the same direction, with the same perspective, but that's how we look at our situation right now. It's something no one can discuss," Riveiro said in the pre-match press conference.

"The numbers are there, it's up to you to look. I'm not here to look smart, telling you all the good things we have done this season.

"If you ask me about my personal feeling, I'm better than ever, with the group, with the football they have been playing since day one in pre-season, with the capacity to overcome problems.

"The capacity of resilience they are showing, everything which is in our control. Results are not in our control. Every time we go to compete, there's an opponent and sometimes they are better than us even though we try everything in order to get the result," he explained.

The titanic clash is set to kick off at 15:30.
