Mhlongo keeps door open on coaching

Former Orlando Pirates captain and Bafana midfielder Benson Mhlongo has opened up on the possibility of becoming a coach.

The former Bafana international officially hung up his boots in 2016 and was immediately recruited in as part of Orlando Pirates' technical team and would later take over as head coach at National First Division (now Motsepe Foundation Championship) outfit TS Sporting.

Mhlongo has since taken a break from coaching and currently occupies a seat at the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) where he serves as coordinator and player development manager.

While still on his coaching hiatus, Mhlongo has now revealed that he is leaving the door open on being a coach again.

"Wherever I can impart knowledge and help people grow, that's where you will find me," Mhlongo told journalists at the Betway 12th man event on Friday.

"You won't find me on the touchline if a team doesn't give me the platform to help these young boys. Whenever I am allowed to help these boys and human beings I will be there. So I don't know where that will be.

The retired no-nonsense midfielder was coy in his response when asked if he would be pursuing his coaching badges to enhance his knowledge.

"In real life, no one can teach another to play football, it's a God-given talent, you just have to guide. So I do not have to enhance.

"[Zakhele] Lepasa comes from me, [Yusuf] Maart comes from me... There are many boys I can point to that I brought through so I know what I can do for these boys. It's not about me being on the touchline, I just need a platform to engage with the young ones. I don't know which platform that will be.

"So anywhere where I'm given the chance, you will find me there. If they give me a chance in football, it's fine."
