Chippa boost top 8 hopes with PLK City scalp

Chippa United moved to within four points of the top eight in the Betway Premiership after defeating Polokwane City 2-0 on Saturday night.

Brain Bwire made a return in goal for City ahead of Manuel Sapunga from the loss to Golden Arrows, whil Justice Chabalala and Bienvenu Eva Nga were restored by the Chilli Boys.

Chippa made a buoyant start where a marauding run on the right by Craig Martin stretched the defence and forced Bulelani Nikani to clear for a corner-kick.

Justice Chabalala attempted the opener through an acrobatic bicycle kick from the resultant corner, but he didn't get it on target.

Nikani went inches to the deadlock through a header from a corner midway through the half, but his effort bounced off the outside post and side-netting.

The Chilli Boys regained momentum a little later and saw the exciting Sinoxolo Kwayiba go high and wide at the back-post after attacking a left-sided cross.

Chippa were ahead five minutes after the break as Azola Ntsabo scored directly from a free-kick that evaded everyone in the box,

Rise and Shine pushed for a quick response and nearly broke clear through a penetrative strike by Langelihle Ndlovu, but he disappointingly fluffed his lines.

City came close in the final five minutes with an indirect free-kick in the area by Oswin Appollis, but the Chilli Boys cleared their lines.

The Chilli Boys made the points safe when a long ball from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali bounced off the head of Nikani and ricocheted in off Bwire for the own goal.

Chippa secured the win and cemented ninth position, as Rise and Shine's winless run extended to eight matches in all competitions.
