Wasteful Chiefs collapse in four-goal thriller

Kaizer Chiefs missed the chance to move third in the Betway Premiership after throwing away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Royal AM on Saturday evening.

Reeve Frosler's suspension presented Dillon Solomons an opportunity to start, while Gaston Sirino was also restored after not featuring against Richards Bay on Wednesday.

It took the boys from Naturena just five minutes to get the ball rolling and go in front after a ball in the channels by Yusuf Maart set Ashley Du Preez away to make the breakthrough.

More woes fell on the outfit from the KwaZulu-Natal province as Wandile Duba doubled the lead with a first-time finish from Solomons.

With the host cruising, Solomons needed to removed from the field of play due to injury he picked up and replaced by Njabulo Blom.

Royal AM were keen to get back in the contest after the underwhelming opening and nearly halved the advantage through a rasping strike outside the box by Bandile Dlamini.

The host still enjoyed momentum around the half-hour mark and saw Du Preez denied a brace when he struck the post from Sirino's assist, while Maart squandered a glorious chance of his own with only Mondli Mpoto to beat.

Before the second half, Royal AM pulled on a substitution where club chairman Andile Mpisane made way for Smiso Gumede.

The change injected a sense of urgency five minutes in as a flick on from the head by Sedwyn George released Ayabulela Maxwele to pounce and halved the score-line.

Du Preez came close to restore their two-goal cushion with a speculative shot left of the area after meeting Sirino's pass, but he was prevented by the opposing defence.

Thwihli Thwahla refused to surrender but rallied purposely in hope of salvaging something though a combination of factors in the final third proved their undoing.

As time loomed, the visitors were rewarded after a delivery from substitute Gumede set Levy Mashiane to grab hold and fired in the equaliser in added time.

With the points shared, the Amakhosi missed the chance to move into third spot on the table as Royal remain outside the top eight.
