Pirates leave it late to sink Chiefs in Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates secured the bragging rights in the first Soweto Derby of the season after securing a late 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs.

Rushwin Dortley, Inacio Miguel, Njabulo Blom, Mduduzi Shabalala were restored to the Chiefs line-up, while Pirates made just two changes in Sipho Chaine and Nkosinathi Sibisi.

The Glamour Boys squandered a big chance with two minutes gone on the clock when Pule Mmodi intercepted a stray pass to go one-on-one, but Chaine narrowed him down and made the block

Highly-rated Relebohile Mofokeng got an equally solid chance for the Buccaneers later on from a ball through the centre of defence, but was thwarted by Miguel.

Forward Tshegofatso Mabasa received a clearer opening in the area after goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma's stray pass out of the back, but the chance went astray.

Pirates introduced a substitution ahead of the second half with Kabelo Dlamini coming on for development graduate Mohau Nkota.

The Amakhosi were gunning a fast start in the resumption as Mmodi came in on the right and cut inside to get a shot in, but Chaine made a stop.

Chiefs threw on new signing Thabo Cele for his debut five minutes from the break as George Matlou made way after picking up a knock.

Opportunities continued to come though when a ball in the channels released Mabasa in on goal, but saw Bvuma equal to task with a close-range save.

Bvuma stood between the Buccaneers and the breakthrough where he drew another point-blank save to keep out Thalente Mbatha's first-time volley.

The Buccaneers continued seeing the majority of chances late on with Deon Hotto in particular leaving Bvuma full stretch through a succession of thumping shots.

Late drama followed when Blom fouled Mofokeng in the box and conceded a penalty in added time, with Patrick Maswanganyi stepping forward beat Bvuma in fine style to seal the win.
