Dino Ndlovu: Rulani Mokwena was the one who scouted me

Ndlovu is one of South Africa's most well-travelled footballers following a career that has seen him turn out for 11 clubs across six countries and three continents and feature in competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

The 32-year-old's journey started at home, however, where, after undergoing a vigorous set of trials, he was plucked from the streets of Klerksdorp to join the academy of now-defunct Platinum Stars.

"When I was done with these chores, I opened this paper that came out in the township and on the back page, there was this big headline, 'Platinum Stars bringing football trials to Matlosana.' They were looking for players born in 1990 or after and I thought, 'I'm born in 1990! This is my time; this is my chance!'

Ndlovu attended the trial and was one of the players selected for follow-up camps in Klerksdorp and Ithuseng, where his performances caught the attention of the team officials in attendance, including one Rulani Mokwena now famously the co-coach of Mamelodi Sundowns.

"Everything started to get serious," he adds. "Alan Freese was there. Rulani Mokwena was there. People don't believe me when I say that Rulani is the one who scouted me. He's the one who brought me to Platinum Stars.

"He followed me from Ithuseng, from there we went to Rustenburg, from Rustenburg to Jo'burg and in Jo'burg, we had like three weeks of trials.

"That was the most difficult trial I have ever had in my life. I didn't have my family with me, there were days when I had to sleep in the train station. But I was chosen to be part of the academy..."
