City pile more misery on Spurs with derby win

Cape Town City reigned supreme in the Ikapa Derby after rallying from behind to defeat Cape Town Spurs 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Citizens made only one change from their goalless draw against TS Galaxy, as Jaedin Rhodes was recalled to join Khanyisa Mayo and Juan Zapata upfront.

Spurs, meanwhile, brought back Luvuyo Phewa, Rushwin Dortley and Jarrod Moroole as three changes from their loss against Golden Arrows.

Shaun Bartlett's charges had a perfect start after Ashley Cupido gave them the lead within the first two minutes with a strike past goalkeeper Darren Keet after a through ball by Chumani Butsaka.

City struggled to create chances, as they took time to settle and Eric Tinkler reacted just after the half-hour mark as he brought on Thabiso Kutumela in place of Zapata to emphasize urgency upfront.

The Citizens started to pressurize Spurs after that and after they had appeals for a handball turned down, they were eventually awarded penalty just before the break after a handball by Dortley in the box.

Darwin Gonzalez took the responsibility on his shoulders and levelled matters for City with a powerful shot into the bottom corner.

The game opened up early in the second stanza, with both sides getting chances but they were not clinical in front of goal.

Bartlett showed his attacking intentions shortly after the hour-mark with a tactical switch, as he brought on Therlo Moosa in place of Michael Morton.

However, City had spaces behind Spurs' defence and Mayo eventually gave the Citizens the lead 19 minutes before time with a first-time finish at the near post after a cross by Gonzalez.

Spurs opened more spaces behind their defence as they sent numbers forward and Mayo had a glorious chance for City moments later after he rounded goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom and faced gaping goals but his shot was cleared off the line by Morne Nel.

City eventually sealed the three points with five minutes remaining after Mayo latched onto a cross and collided with Siyanda Msani, as both players bundled the ball over the line as they were carried by momentum into goal.

The Citizens looked more likely to score in the dying minutes, as they secured their third win of the season while Spurs lost their seventh straight game.
