Sundowns' perfect league record ended by CT City

Mamelodi Sundowns' 11- game winning run in the DStv Premiership came to an end after a goalless draw against Cape Town City on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns made six changes following their narrow in over Pyramids in the CAF Champions League, as Thapelo Morena, Rushine De Reuck, Gaston Sirino, Bongani Zungu, Sphelele Mkhulise and Sipho Mbule were all brought in.

The Citizens, meanwhile, were without Khanyisa Mayo due to suspension and Thabiso Kutumela could not face his parent club due to a loan agreement.

The Brazilians had a bright start as within the first four minutes, Terrence Mashego had a chance to score against his former team but his thumping shot in the box was saved by goalkeeper Darren Keet.

The game opened up after that although City's first chance came midway into the first stanza after Jaedin Rhodes fired a shot over the crossbar from a late run into the box.

Rulani Mokwena's charges had the momentum after the half-hour mark and they should have been ahead just before the interval as Lucas Ribeiro Costa won possession from a high press in the box and had only Keet to beat but curled his shot just wide.

City were threatening on their attacks and Lorenzo Gordinho almost broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a free header in the box that was saved low at the near post by shot-stopper Ronwen Williams.

Sundowns had a slow start in the second stanza, with City quick to close them down and on the hour-mark, the visitors reacted with changes from the bench as Themba Zwane and Aubrey Modiba came on for Bongani and Gaston Sirino for tactical reasons.

The Brazilians upped the intensity of their attacks after that and De Reuck came close to breaking the deadlock 20 minutes before time with a towering header in the box that flashed just over the crossbar.

City dropped deep in their own half in the closing stages and to try open them up, the Brazilians brought on the speed of Thapelo Maseko and Lesiba Nku on either wing.

However, the Citizens were pressing Sundowns high in the dying minutes, making it difficult for them to build from the back and in the end the sides shared the spoils.

Despite dropping points on the day, Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the log to points, with three games in hand.
