Chiefs' winning run halted by Royal AM

Kaizer Chiefs were unable to make it three straight wins in the DStv Premiership after a goalless draw against Royal AM on Saturday evening.

Colombian Jasond Gonzales made his league debut for Chiefs, while George Matlou also earned a start, with Mduduzi Mdantsane and Tebogo Potsane dropping out of the side.

The Amakhosi looked to make the early opening with a run in-behind from Ashley Du Preez after he got a yard on the last defender, but he snapped wide of the near post.

Royal AM worked out their first threat around the half-hour mark after Sphiwe Cele got out wide and cut inside to force a diving save off goalkeeper Brandon Petersen with a teasing shot.

The Amakhosi missed a golden chance later on when a long ball from Yusuf Maart caught out Xolani Ngcobo and saw Du Preez turn the loose ball into the side-netting with the goal in plain sight.

Chiefs were denied the breakthrough yet again just past the half-hour mark as a long range drive from Edson Castillo following a loose ball clattered the woodwork.

With the second half underway, Thwihli Thwahla threatened to take the lead when a first-time header in the area by Ruzaigh Gamildien flashed off the side-netting.

Gonzalez very nearly opened his account with a powerful header in the area from a floated cross, but Ngcobo pushed across and palmed for a corner-kick midway in the second half.

At the same time, the Amakhosi coach Molefi Ntseki introduced a triple change as Christian Saile Basomboli, Reeve Frosler and Mduduzi Shabalala were thrown into the fray.

The changes brought effect as Frosler got on the right to send in a cross which Saile fired off the underside of the crossbar before Ngcobo smothered Shabalala on the rebound.

Both sides did have a go at each other before full-time however neither were able to get the opener and they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
