Ngezana keeps Chiefs in CAF CL hunt

Kaizer Chiefs climbed to fourth spot on the DStv Premiership table with a 1-0 win over ten-man Richards Bay FC on Saturday afternoon.

Chiefs were without Ashley Du Preez through injury following last weekend's Soweto derby win over Orlando Pirates, but weren't short of options up top and called on Bonfils-Caleb Bimeyimana.

The Amakhosi hit the front eight minutes in when Siyabonga Ngezana got on the end of Mduduzi Shabalala's well-weighted free-kick and headed into the near corner of the net.

Richards Bay's quest to remain in the tie was dealt another blow as goalkeeper Salim Magoola charged outside his area and handled a lofted ball, which saw him receive a straight red card.

With a man short, Ruchards Bay had to adjust their stall and with second choice goalkeeper Neil Boshoff replacing Langelihle Mhlongo, who was the man sacrificed.

Chiefs yet again found space in the home side's defensive line and a ball over the top sent Bimenyimana through on goal, but Boshoff parried the forward's half-volley before the interval.

The Amakhosi continued to enjoy the better openings after halftime and targeted more through Christian Saile Basomboli's header before a snap-shot from Keagan Dolly forced a save off Boshoff.

Boshoff made himself big again five minutes in the second when he got down and palmed Yusuf Maart's low shot and denied Bimenyimana on the follow-up too.

Chiefs added fresh set of faces from the bench in the middle of the second half, with Basomboli Salie sacrificed for Kamohelo Mahlatsi and Sabelo Radebe introduced for Shabalala.

The Amakhosi didn't stop putting pressure on the host and nearly doubled their lead after Radebe tucked a ball from Dolly onto the roof of the net.

There were more openings from the Soweto giants in the closing stages, most notably through Wandile Duba's angled shot from a counter and a speculative drive by Siyethemba Sithebe, but the one goal was enough for Chiefs to secure back-to-back wins.
