SuperSport humble Pirates to cement second spot

Orlando Pirates missed the chance to move up to second spot on the DStv Premiership table after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of SuperSport United.

The suspension of Patrick Maswanganyi earned a return for Thembinkosi Lorch, with Tapelo Xoki in for Nkosinathi Sibisi as the Buccaneers looked to stretch their winning run.

Fortune Makaringe gave the Buccaneers the ideal start on five minutes when he sneaked in at the far post to bundle home in Deon Hotto's cross.

Matsatsantsa remained courageous despite the slow start and could've gone level with a close-range header by Ime Okon from a corner-kick but the defender went over.

There were further six-yard entries for the Tshwane shortly thereafter which saw the Buccaneers sit on top of their defensive-third and looked to play out on the counter.

This was highlighted a littler later when a forced turnover led to a switch of play to Lorch who cutback for the on-rushing Karim Kimvuidi to curl inches wide of Goss' goal.

SuperSport were level in fine style when Shandre Campbell beat the offside trap to connect with Bradley Grobler's square pass to blast in the top corner ten minutes to halftime.

Ten minutes after the break, Grobler steered United in front with a free-header from an unmarked position in the box after meeting Campbell's pin-point corner.

The Sea Robbers made two alterations on 63 minutes as Zakhele Lepasa replaced Evidence Makgopa before Relebohile Mofokeng came on for Katlego Otladisa.

Lepasa should've made an instant impact when he received a clear chance to draw them level wide of the area, but had his teasing shot cleared off the goal-line.

Campbell continued to wreak havoc with 15 minutes to play as he pressed goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi off the ball and slotted in an empty net to complete his brace.

Pirates still remained confident and pushed all out to salvage something later on, but SuperSport held on for the win to cement second spot.
