Ex-Chiefs coach: Vilakazi musn't be thrown into deep end

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has warned the club's supporters not to put both the club and Mfundo Vilakazi under unnecessary pressure.

Vilakazi was amongst the star performers for Carling All Stars against Carling Cup champions Stellenboch FC at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

Amakhosi faithful has been pleading with the management to promote the DStv Diski Challenge star to the struggling senior team.

"He has talent, I suppose there's a lot of work that needs to be done," the Stars of Africa Academy director tells KickOff.

"I think we must allow Cavin Johnson to refine the boy, and prepare him for the first team.

"I don't think they should take any shortcut, the first team is a huge challenge for someone who is from the academy from a psychological point of view, how does he deal with the pressure of being in the first team, the expectations of the coaches.

"He scored a free kick which I think was a mistake more than anything from the goalkeeper's part.

"Take nothing away from him though in certain moments. But it's not a test, the test will come when he has to play in the Premiership.

"This is the team where the fans once they see a little bit of talent immediately feel the player is ready.

"I feel there is still a lot that needs to be done, and I believe they should exercise patience, and blood the player in.

"I wouldn't say he is not ready [for first-team football], but he mustn't be thrown into the deep end.

"He must be disciplined, he must be mentally strong, he mustn't be somebody that is easily influenced by outside factors, he must listen to the senior players, he must listen to the coaches, he must not be stubborn or arrogant.

"He needs to be psychologically sound and healthy as a person. The team already has some young players that Cavin Johnson has brought on, so he must be patient as well."
