In this edition of In The Spotlight, recently released head coach of Black Leopards, Zeca Marques, expresses confidence in his ability to restore Kaizer Chiefs to their former glory.
As reported by KickOff, Marques has left his position at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Leopards and is now free to join a team of his choice.
The Portuguese-born coach, who holds a UEFA A License, lasted only five games with Leopards, during which he recorded two wins, two draws, and just one loss.
Growing up, who was your idol?
"Pele. I was 12 years old and had already arrived in South Africa. Pele was special. There were a few players I admired in South Africa, including Ace Ntsoelengoe, Ace Mnini, Teenage Dladla, and Jan Lechaba. I haven't seen Jomo Sono play that much."
Which team is your favorite?
"I don't have a favorite team in South Africa; I only follow FC Porto from Portugal. However, I admired Kaizer Chiefs because they had exceptional players during those days. I also admired Durban City, Highlands Park, and Lusitano."
Who is your best friend in football?
"Roger De Sa. We go way back, having played and coached together over many years. There is a special bond between us because we both grew up in the sport and supported each other throughout our football careers."
Who is your favorite player in SA?
"I don't see anyone at this stage that makes me say, 'Wow! He's exceptional.' There are no standout players in South Africa right now who can be compared to those I mentioned earlier. We simply don't have footballers with that spark."
What about Relebohile Mofokeng?
"He's just a youngster that is currently being highlighted, but he needs to prove himself. If a player like Mofokeng is dominating every discussion, it indicates a problem. We are celebrating one player in a country that has hundreds of footballers. It shows just how starved we are for players with a wow factor."
If you were to join any PSL club as a coach...
"Kaizer Chiefs. I believe I could fix it and turn things around. It would be an opportunity to do something special."
If you could live anywhere in the world...
"It's a tricky question. There are many places I could consider. Given the state of the world right now, I still think South Africa is the best place to be."
