Mabasa tails 'Tso', 8th red for Ka Bo Yellow, Chiefs win again

Here's your Weekend Wrap as Tshegofatso Mabasa closed in on Benedict Vilakazi's record, Kaizer Chiefs made it seven goals in two Nedbank Cup matches, and Mamelodi Sundowns opponents had two penalty calls ignored.

A step closer to Bucs record

Orlando Pirates made easy work of Baroka FC with a 3-1 victory in the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup at Orlando.

A Mabasa hat-trick was enough to see them progress to the next round, with Sydney Malivha netting for the second-tier outfit.

Mabasa's goal tally in a Bucs jersey now stands at 44, surpassing Phumlani Mkhize and the late Lesley Manyathela (both 41).

He is now just 14 goals shy of a club record of 58 goals set by Vilakazi.

Goals on the menu as Nabi cooks

Chiefs made it two wins on the bounce as they defeated Chippa United 3-0 in the Nedbank Cup round of 16.

Goals from Gaston Sirino, Inacio Miguel (penalty), and Pule Mmodi and ensured they are in with a chance of ending their long-standing trophy drought.

It is a performance that would have pleased head coach Nasreddine Nabi as they try to climb up the table in the league, while also going all the way in the cup competition.

Another red for Ka Bo Yellow

Sundowns sealed a spot in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 win over lower division side Mpheni Home Defenders at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.

A Tashreeq Matthews opener was followed up by a thunderous Bathusi Aubaas strike in the first half.

Controversially, the same Matthews would receive his marching orders early in the second half when he made a late challenge and collected a second yellow card.

It was the eighth occasion that the Tshwane giants have received a red card this season, a record that will reflect poorly on their on-field discipline.

The Brazilians also survived a few scares as the ABC Motsepe League side made forays of their own into the opposition box, and also had two penalty appeals in the first half waved away.

AmaZulu denied clear goal?

Meanwhile, there was more controversy in the Free State as AmaZulu FC crashed out of the Nedbank Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Marumo Gallants.

A first-half strike from Junior Zindoga was enough to settle the tie, but the visitors cried foul about the officiating on the day, as they were denied a seemingly legitimate goal.

"Very disappointed by the referee. If you see a goal that is written off by the referee," AmaZulu co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi said on SuperSport TV after the match.

"Both the referee and the linesman are supposed to help each other on such things. But now we suffered through such a situation. It is very disappointing."
