'Serero would be a waste at Pirates or Chiefs'

The reason why South African midfielder Thulani Serero was not considered by either Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs could have been revealed.

Serero has made a return to the country after leaving Khor Fakkan and is looking to revive his career back in the PSL after not finding suitors abroad since parting ways with the Emirati outfit at the end of June last year.

As previously reported by KickOff.com, 'Cream' has been training with Cape Town City, with his handlers negotiating a potential deal with the Citizens behind the scenes.

The availability of a player of Serero's quality was expected to pique interest from the big local teams, especially Chiefs and Pirates, yet the Soweto duo appear not to be vying for his signature.

Former Buccaneer goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has revealed why he believes the 34-year-old was not going to fit in at either club.

"Going to Pirates or Chiefs, I don't think he would add the value that we need. Serero is one of the exquisite footballers, the most comfortable footballer we know in South African football," Josephs said on SoccerBeat YouTube Channel.

"But at teams like Pirates, Chiefs, we need vocal leaders. I think he would be a waste there.

"To be at Cape Town City, that's exactly what they need, because they are just a bunch of young footballers there. So, he would definitely be a good addition to them."

The timing of Serero's availability could have been an issue as well, as Bucs would most likely be interested in reducing the average age in their midfield ahead of next season, with Makhehlene Makhaula at 35 and Miguel Timm 33.

Amakhosi also currently have an overloaded midfield following the signing of Thabo Cele, with the likes of Samkelo Zwane, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, and George Matlou falling down the pecking order, which has Yusuf Maart and Sibongiseni Mthethwa ahead.

Edson Castillo is also set to return from injury.
