In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, current Magesi FC assistant coach Jacky Ledwaba shares his experiences regarding his first salary in professional football.
The former Mahwelereng Real Rovers and Zulu Royals attacker emphasizes that financial rewards were not a primary concern for him during his playing days, his main focus was to impress on the field.
Who did you sign with when you received your first cheque?
"I signed with Mahwelereng Real Rovers. I grew up in their development system. That was in 1995. They were my home team."
How much was it?
"It was R500. I was still in school at that time, finishing my matric. Just like my teachers, I received a monthly pay cheque [laughs].
"But back then, that didn't mean much to me, I was just passionate about the game of football. I remained down to earth, even though teachers gave me a lot of special treatment compared to other learners.
How did you celebrate your first pay cheque?
"I gave all of it to my parents. My mother was the one who used to buy me things because, to be honest, I didn't have a real need for money."
Are you happy with the amount of money you earned as a footballer throughout your career?
"To be honest, yes, I am happy. Money was not my primary motivation."
Do you regret not putting money first?
"Not exactly, because I can't complain about what I was paid while I was playing.
"Yes, I do feel that I deserved to be paid more, but I was satisfied with what I earned."
