'Bra J knew how to discipline a player'

In this edition of Locker Room Secrets, KickOff catches up with former Jomo Cosmos midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

Mokoena reveals how one of his Ezenkosi teammates hated taking a shower.

Who was always late?

"It would happen once in a while. Most times, we would keep time because we respected Bra J. He knew how to discipline a player.

"But what I liked about him is that once he included you in his starting line-up, he never removed you [laughs].

"He would discipline you by making fun of you in front of your teammates. He didn't dare fine you because he knew he was paying us peanuts [laughs].

"He was like a father to us, Bra J. We wanted to be there, we were happy to be associated with the brand Jomo Cosmos, even though we were earning little."

A teammate with any interesting ritual before they played?

"There was only one guy who was allowed to bring his own muti, and that's the Senegalese, Mamadou Diallo.

"That guy's muti made him smell so bad. The bad smell used to fill the whole dressing room. He would tell you straight, 'My brother, I'm African, so I use muti'. That's what he would say, and Jomo Sono would say nothing. That guy smelled like s**t [laughs]."

Who was the jokester?

"Innocent Ntsume and Sipho Sephadi."

Was it a muti change room?

"Bra J used to come up with something different every time. It depended on the team we were playing against.

"Let's say it's Tuesday, and he didn't come to training, we already knew it was because usayodonsa isihalahala. He used to always do that when we were about to play against the big teams."

Who was the singer?

"We were all singers. Whoever wanted to start a song, did. We didn't have anyone specific. Even those who were bad singers, we allowed them to sing."

Best- and worst-dressed

"[Manuel] 'Tico Tico' Bucuane was the best-dressed in his traditional African clothes. Most of us were dressed in casual clothes. Other than that, you would always find us in our Jomo Cosmos tracksuits.

"Sammy Magalefa was the worst-dressed. He would put on the first clothing item that he came across at his place."

Who never showered?

"[Laughs] Still Sammy Magalefa. He'd tell you, I'm going to shower at home, but even there at home, he'd just go straight to bed without taking a shower. You'd realise in the morning at training from the smell that he didn't shower."

Rate coach's team talk:

"Bra J was the best. He didn't complicate things, he made everything simple."
