'PSL club chairman threatened to shoot me'

In this week's edition of Secret Footballer, a former footballer recounts to KickOff how a PSL club chairman once threatened to kill him if he didn't return to his club.

The former Mpumalanga Black Aces player describes a frightening experience he had just two weeks after joining the club.

During a January transfer window, he received a terrifying call from the chairman of one of his former clubs.

"A lot is happening behind the scenes in professional football," reveals the Secret Footballer.

"I had just been released by my former club, which I won't name for obvious reasons. They thought my career was over.

"Fortunately, Mpumalanga Black Aces came to my rescue, as they were still competing in the National First Division at that time.

"I was about to sign with Aces when my former club began to act like a jealous ex-boyfriend, demanding that I come back.

"I was in a hotel room with one of my Aces teammates, enjoying my new situation, when I received a phone call from the chairman of a PSL club I had played for. It was one of the most terrifying calls I had ever received," he said.

"I was looking forward to a new chapter in the NFD and we were about to play our Nedbank Cup last 32 fixture when I received that call.

"Just three weeks after my departure, my former employers regretted letting me go.

"The chairman of my former club said to me, 'Hey boy, listen, you need to get yourself back here by the end of the day tomorrow, and please make sure you don't disappoint me. Otherwise, I will send hitmen to Witbank to come and shoot you! Don't play for Aces or else you will be cup-tied!'

"Yoh! Imagine all of this happening while I had no existing contract with his club.

"Despite the threats, I never returned to his club. I signed with Aces, and we had a good run in the Nedbank Cup that year, reaching the final before losing to Sundowns at Johannesburg Stadium."
