'Pirates players were scared of Muamba Musasa'

In this week's edition of the Secret Footballer, a former Orlando Pirates player reveals to KickOff how the club's players used to fear their teammate Felix Muamba Musasa.

The no-nonsense Democratic Republic of Congo defender arrived at Pirates from TP Mazembe in 2003 and lasted only two seasons.

He was then shipped out to the likes of City Pillars and Mpumalanga Black Aces.

According to this week's Secret Footballer, Musasa, who used to wear white gloves in every game he played [no matter the weather], was a loner at the Sea Robbers during his stay there as he always made it clear he didn't join the club to make friends but to work for his family.

Even the club's jokesters didn't dare fool around when the Congolese was around as he wanted "law and order" to be maintained at all times, especially on the pitch.

"Those days the Pirates dressing room was full of pranksters and players who messed around, hiding other players' stuff, but nobody tried that with Felix Muamba Musasa," The Secret Footballer tells KickOff.

"The likes of Tonic Chabalala were also always serious, but not like Felix Muamba Musasa.

"Musasa, he always had that serious face, and in a way, we were all scared of him.

"Musasa used to kick all of us at training. Imagine every day going to training, and you have to worry about being injured by your teammate.

"You know during camps, we used to sleep in pairs, but nobody wanted to share a room with Felix Muamba Musasa.

"I remember at Holiday Inn, the one in Sandton, strikers would share rooms and midfielders would share rooms, and so on.

"And Jimmy Tau, as a defender, had to share a room with Felix Muamba Musasa. Remember they both played the right-back position.

"So before we slept it was usual for us to visit the other hotel rooms to check on each other. We would even chat about our plans for life after football.

"But because Musasa used to kick us at training, we would leave him on his own in their hotel room and only call Jimmy.

"And Musasa would go to complain to team manager Phil Setshedi saying, 'Ya, I don't know what I did to these guys, or is it because I'm a foreigner?'

"And we'd tell the team manager straight that we cannot share a room with somebody who kicks his own teammates.

"We were scared of Musasa, that guy didn't have peace. After kicking you he'd tell you straight with that Congolese accent, 'I came here to do my job!'

"Imagine kicking your own teammates? And tomorrow, on matchday, who are you going to play alongside?

"Another teammate who enjoyed kicking his teammates at training was our goalkeeper Williams Okpara."
