'Teams spend around R30k just to bribe another club...

In this edition of Secret Footballer, KickOff speaks with a player from an ABC Motsepe League club about the corruption in South Africa's third tier.

According to the Secret Footballer, results in this amateur league are sometimes determined before the season even begins.

"Our clubs are no longer receiving grants in the ABC Motsepe League. Previously, teams used to receive a monthly grant of R30,000, but that is no longer the case," the Secret Footballer tells KickOff.

"Some provinces have decided to split the league into two streams to reduce travel costs. Corruption is worse in this setup because some teams are effectively bought not to honour their fixtures, allowing the home team to earn free points.

"Sometimes a club will pay for the bus fare of their opponent or buy them food, as long as they agree to lose the match. This often happens when an away team is struggling to pay for its own transport.

"A chairman might tell a coach not to travel with the team and take charge on that particular day. If that occurs, you can be sure the coach is refusing to play along or is intended to lose the match.

"I remember a situation where a club chairman told us players not to cross the centre line and only to play within our half. We were not allowed to attack against that specific team.

"Teams often spend around R30,000 just to bribe another club to lose a match. It is more common at clubs that don't pay salaries, as opposition club bosses will promise players a R1,500 bonus each if they agree to lose, the Secret Footballer added.

"Most clubs in this league do not pay salaries, they pay players a R250 to R500 win bonus per match. So, R1,500 for a single match means a lot to an ABC Motsepe League player because it can help buy some food and six Savannah ciders.

"The current generation of players drink a lot, and we even smoke dagga, especially since there isn't regular drug testing in this league. It is the most corrupt league [laughs].

"The league administrators sometimes determine in advance who should go to the national play-offs before the season even starts."
