The gap between Sundowns, Pirates, and Chiefs…

The period between last Saturday and the next will provide Orlando Pirates with a feel of where they now stand in comparison to both their biggest rivals.

Pirates were 1-0 winners against Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Saturday in what was their fourth consecutive victory over their rivals.

That win provided a portion of evidence in demonstrating the gap that now exists between the two biggest clubs in the country.

Minus the results between Pirates and Chiefs, the two clubs are evidently not moving at the same speed.

Before Pirates took on Sekhukhune United on Wednesday, they were already eight points ahead of Chiefs having played four games less.

Bucs have already won the MTN8 this season and besides having interests in the destination of the Betway Premiership trophy, they remain alive in the CAF Champions League and Nedbank Cup.

Last season, Pirates won two trophies and ended 14 points ahead of Amakhosi.

The season before, it was another two cups with the gap between the two in the league at 10 points as Pirates finished second and Chiefs fifth.

Pirates have now won six trophies since Chiefs last lifted silverware back in May 2015.

With The Buccaneers improving, it has meant their biggest competition has come from Mamelodi Sundowns – who have won the seven league titles and sit top of the standings this season.

Throughout their era of dominance stretching from Pitso Mosimane's first league title at the club in 2014, The Brazilians have won 18 trophies.

This has catapulted them to being the most successful club through the PSL era years.

Locally, with the seven league titles in a row won by Sundowns, Pirates have ended in second position four times and in third twice.

Of note is that Pirates' drive to wrestle the title from Sundowns this term comes on the back of having finished 24 and 23 points behind in the last two seasons.

Jose Riveiro's men trail by six points so far this term, though they have a game in hand after their match against Royal AM was called off.

Both Pirates and Sundowns are in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals and Last 16 of the Nedbank Cip.

Chiefs – who have played three games more and have no title interest – already trail Sundowns by 14 points this term and have already lost twice in their meetings against the Chloorkop-based team.
