'I'm the kind of defender who doesn't back down from a striker'

In this edition of The Story Behind The Nickname, KickOff speaks with former Orlando Pirates defender Felix Muamba Musasa about his popular nickname, 'Mkhwenyana'.

The Congolese player also explains the reason behind his signature white gloves.

How would you describe your style of play?

"I'm the kind of defender who doesn't back down from a striker. I'm the no-nonsense type of defender. With me, it's either you or the ball."

"I used to practice karate, acrobatics, and various martial arts."

Your nickname, 'Mkhwenyana', how did it come about?

"I got that nickname from the Orlando Pirates supporters because I was always wearing my white gloves. As a 'mkhwenyana' [son-in-law/ groom], when you get married, you always wear white gloves. So in every game, I felt like I had to 'marry' my opponent while marking them."

Did you like it?

"Yes, I did. 100%."

Before 'Mkhwenyana', did you have any other nicknames?

"Yes, in the DRC, they used to call me Tanzambi or Jackie Chan. That's what they called me when I was playing for TP Mazembe and the national team."

If you could choose a different nickname now, what would it be?

"I'm happy with both my nicknames—from DRC and those in South Africa. I still love my nicknames and wouldn't change them for anything.

"I want to thank the chairman of TP Mazembe, Moses Katumbi, for bringing me to a high level of football, along with everyone else who helped develop my career at TP Mazembe.

"Thank you, KickOff. Since I arrived in South Africa in 2002, KickOff has always been there for me. Thank you, Mzansi Fo Sho."
