Throwback Thursday: Joseph Makhanya

Joseph Makhanya hung up his boots in the 2012/13 season while on the books of Moroka Swallows, aged 33.

"I felt that it was the right time to retire after 13 years of professional football," Makhanya tells snl24.com/kickoff.

'Dukuduku' says he was spotted by Orlando Pirates for their development team while playing amateur football at Kagiso Porto. He says it was with the Buccaneers that he enjoyed his football the most.

"Because of the fans, the rich history of the team, and I grew up supporting Pirates," he explains, while also revealing it was where he earned the most money.

"It was enough at that time in 2009 at Pirates [the salary]. It's always a challenge to save up money, especially if you are not getting more than enough."

These days the 37-year-old is married with two kids and works on a government football project to put food on the table.

"We are blessed with two kids, a boy Lihle, 13, and girl Hlelo, 6. I'm currently a director of a local team Kagiso Porto and also running a grassroots government project for CWP [Community Working Programme] Football For Youth," he continues.

"I'm coming up with soccer programmes for grassroots coaches to be implemented in their local teams. Then do a supervision on those coaches and players, then make a report. Because it's a government project they make payment every month because it's an ongoing programme. I'm living a simple, responsible lifestyle."

The Kagiso resident says games he will forever cherish in his life are the Soweto Derbies.

"Derby matches against Chiefs 2003, 2004 because I was the hero of having scored the only goal of the match. Hero of the day rather," he concludes.
