Where Are They Now: From PSL to SAPS

In this week's feature of Where Are They Now, KickOff catches up with former Mthatha Bush Bucks goalkeeper Vusumuzi Yashe about his life after football.

Yashe explains how he managed to transform from being a Premier Soccer League star to catching criminals.

Who am I?

"Vusumuzi Yashe was born in a place called Lady Frere. That's where my father's family is based. when my father found a job in Mthatha, we then left Lady Frere for Mthatha. So, that is where I grew up, in Mthatha. I started playing football at the age of seven. At the age of nine, I was already playing in the U12s.

"By the time I was 16, I played for a team called Amangothothobane, which was owned by the Mthatha Police.

"I think they were playing in the old OK League. I was then recruited by Bush Bucks at the age of 16."

My playing days

"I should have stayed at Bush Bucks when they got relegated in 2003. The Bush Bucks people were so loyal to me. The treatment I got... they treated me like their child.

"The love of money was one of the things that proved to be very dangerous to me. I put money first. I had offers while Bush Bucks was going through relegation, and the money was right.

"Remember Bush Bucks was liquidated, but through that process, I had to stay two months without a club. Because the liquidation matter was still in court, I couldn't join another team."

And by that time we were not getting any salaries at Bush Bucks because their accounts were frozen."

Did I make money from soccer?

"It was not enough. The value of the money in those days was not like today's. I remember my first salary was R800, and that was in 1997.

"Those days, we were only happy to sign for a professional team and appear on TV. That's all we cared about."

Where I'm living

"I'm based in East London. I've got my own family. Unfortunately, I don't have a boy, all my kids are girls."

Jobs since playing the game?

"When I retired, I went to coaching, goalkeeper coaching that is. I worked for a team called OR Tambo Cosmos.

"I also worked as a journalist for Mthatha Fever. I was doing Sports and Entertainment."

My current job

"I'm now working for the SAPS. It's funny because some people don't recognise me by my face but by my name, Vusumuzi Yashe. They'd ask, 'Are you the same Vusumuzi Yashe who played football?' And I'd say yes [laughs]."
