Maduka hails Royal AM's defending against Chiefs

Royal AM head coach John Maduka was pleased to see his side keep a clean sheet against Kaizer Chiefs after their early-season struggles.

The KwaZulu-Natal side resumed their DStv Premiership campaign with a goalless draw against the Amakhosi on Sunday afternoon.

Maduka felt his side did have chances in the first half but says they dropped the intensity in the second period.

"If you look at the game itself, first-half good combination play, get into that final third we created good chances, unfortunately we were not clinical enough but you know, good play," Maduka told SuperSport TV.

"In the second half I think we dropped a little bit especially in terms of us going forward more the same way we did in the first-half. But first-half we could have scored two or three goals but unfortunately it wasn't to be.

"I think we were not clinical enough. I said it at halftime that when you're not on top of the opponent, what you do is to make sure that you finish but if you don't do that, those opportunities you don't get them again in the second half," he said.

Maduka says he wanted the team to improve defensively after the break.

"It has been our problem in defence whereby we concede goals and how do we concede goals, it's because we make mistakes in critical areas and we get punished and we said let's improve, because for us (not to concede) we can be able to score goals, let's minimize mistakes that cost us most of the time, then we take it from there," he went on.

"And that happened today, we defended as a team, the chances that Chiefs had, mistakes again, our decision-making not really right, that's why they had those kind of chances.

"But very solid in defence, it's something to take on from this game, something to build on. Going forward consistency is one of the things, we shouldn't only play in big games like this. I think if we play in each and every game like this we'll win so many games," he added.
