'Some players are maybe not good enough' – Broos

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has reiterated his stance that certain PSL players aren't at the level required to represent the national team.

South Africa brought the international break to a close on Tuesday after recording a narrow 1-0 win over Botswana at the FNB Stadium, courtesy of a free-kick goal from the boot of Teboho Mokoena.

The result saw Bafana Bafana record back-to-back wins following last weekend's 4-0 victory over Sierra Leone but the performance on the night left head coach Hugo Broos with much to desire.

"First of all, I am happy with the victory. It was a goal for us to have two victories from this camp and we have them, so satisfaction and happiness," Broos said during his post match press conference, per SAFA's media team.

"On the other side, I am not happy with the performance today. This is not what we expected and I think it's clear that some players are maybe not good enough or are not able to bring what you have to do at this level. So, PSL is something but international games are tougher, are quicker, are different...

"Therefore also, I chose two have two teams to see what those two teams can do, what the players can do. And again, today, I'm really not happy with it, but again, we won, and that's the most important thing."

This is not the first time that Broos has spoken out about the quality of players at his disposal, with the Belgian tactician having previously criticized the standard of the PSL as a whole following a defeat to Morocco in June.

"...Let's face the problem of South Africa and the problem is that the level of our PSL is not high enough. We don't make players with high quality," he said on that occasion, in part of an explosive press conference for which he later apologised.

Bafana Bafana are expected to be back in action in November, although details of fixtures or a camp are yet to be confirmed, before returning to competitive action in March next year for a set of 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Liberia.
