Da Gama, who recently handed the Under-23 job by virtue of being a Bafana assistant, picks up the pieces of a team that has been inactive since failing to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games, with the last competitive outing for this age-group having been the 2011 All Africa Games in Mozambique.
"The Under-23s are inactive for long periods of time, but we are trying to find a system ... there is a system that has been put in place by our head coach and the technical committee," he says.
"We want to have a very good link between the Under-17s and Under-20s and then the Under-20s and Under-23s. Our first competition will be the All African Cup from April 22-24 and then obviously the Olympic Games qualifiers for which we are waiting for the dates from FIFA.
"But in saying that, we have put a very good plan in place and we are waiting for the technical committee and management to come back to us and approve that.
“We will try to have as many camps as possible. At times with the Under-20s and Under-23s there will be a bit of an overlink there, so we will try and manage that as best as we can.
“However, we are looking forward to having a strong and competitive team that will also try and bridge the gap of providing more younger players for the national team.”
The national Under-23 team failed to qualify for the London Olympic Games after coming unstuck at the 2011 CAF Under-23 Championships in Morocco, which doubled up as Olympic qualifiers. The next Olympic Games will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro.
