Ex-Pirates duo in limbo as Botswana club close doors

Two former Orlando Pirates stars have found themselves in limbo after a top-flight club in Botswana closed down.

Sifiso Myeni and Rooi Mahamutsa were plying their trade in the Botswana Premier League with VTM FC, but they are now without a club.

Myeni made the decision to join VTM in 2022, before Mahamutsa made the switch a year later.

The club announced on Thursday that will not be competing in the upcoming season and will be ceasing their operations as a professional football club.

"Today, we called you here to announce that VTM FC is ceasing its operations as a professional football entity," the club announced in statement.

"The club will not be participating in the premier league this coming 2024 / 25 season. We are scaling down to development, under 9, under 13 and 15 starting this coming season.

The current atmosphere and dynamics of local football has forced us into a harsh realization that our project is not sustainable, at least not now.

"For you to run a successful premier league club, you need resources. Unfortunately, only a few clubs can afford that.

The Botswana outfit will now be shifting their focus to youth football, but they admitted they are unsure if they will return to professional football.

"What does the future hold? In the areas surrounding VTM Arena, we will be working with young boys inspired by the existence of our club in the area. We will continue working with them, even if it is just to see to it they can have a safe place to play and grow," the club added.

"As for whether VTM FC will make a comeback in future, that is not known. Only time will tell. What we are sure of as of now is that we will not be lost to football. We love this game.
