Another bite of the cherry for ex-Chiefs defender

Siyabonga Ngezana's European adventure will take another turn on Thursday night as the former Kaizer Chiefs defender makes his UEFA Europa League debut.

Ngezana – who plays for Romanian champions FCSB – has been at the forefront of keeping South Africa relevant in UEFA club competition football this season having played in three rounds of the Champions League qualifiers.

That Champions League journey ended in the third round of qualifiers with a 4-3 defeat to Czech club Sparta Prague last week, leading to relegation to the Europa League.

Tonight (19:00), FCSB will be at Austrian club LASK for the first leg of their Play-Off to determine who moves into the group stages, where Manchester United, Lazio, Roma, FC Porto and Tottenham Hotspur are amongst those waiting.

Just like he has done for most of this season with nine appearances already, the Bafana Bafana defender will again be expected to start.

Should FCSB fail to reach the group stages of the Europa League, then they will be thrown into the group stages of the Conference League, which is UEFA's third-tier league.

This means whatever happens against LASK, Ngezana will still play in the group stages of one Europe's club competitions.

The 27-year-old has pushed his way into the Bafana fold since moving to Romania from Chiefs last year.

Ngezana has already played 40 games for FCSB in just over a year.
