Former Bafana star Fortune lands new coaching role

Former Bafana Bafana and Manchester United star Quinton Fortune has landed a new coaching role abroad after being appointed as an assistant manager at Mexican giants C.D. Guadalajara.

Following recent moves abroad by Pitso Mosimane, Benni McCarthy and Fadlu Davids, the latter of whom has since returned to South Africa, former South Africa international Quinton Fortune has become the latest local coach to land a coaching role overseas.

Fortune, who previously served as an U23 coach at Manchester United and as a first team coach at Reading, has been appointed as an assistant manager by Mexican giants Guadalajara, popularly known as Chivas.

The 45-year-old was unveiled on Monday as part of a four-man coaching change by the club, which will see him partner Claudio Arzeno and Nuno Miguel Gomes as one of three assistants to new head coach Veljko Paunovic.

"Club Deportivo Guadalajara is a great challenge for Veljko Paunovic, so he will need the support of highly qualified people who complement the intentions of the new Atletico coach," the club said in a statement.

"Below we will introduce you to the assistants who will help the Herd strategist in preparing the team for Clausura 2023. 3 is the magic number... 3 are the assistants that 'Pauno' will have in Guadalajara. Who is it about? No more and no less than Claudio Arzeno, Nuno Miguel Gomes and Quinton Fortune."

Fortune previously played alongside Paunovic during their shared time at LaLiga side Atletico Madrid and worked under the Serbian during his spell as manager of Reading in England.
