Serero return talk gathers momentum

The proposed PSL return for Thulani Serero is up and kicking with the former Bafana Bafana midfielder having various options being considered locally.

Serero's contract at UAE Pro League club Khorfakkan has expired, putting the 34-year-old back on the market as a free agent.

This time last year, Serero was in the same situation after the end of his stay at Al-Jazira, where he spent four years.

He then Khorfakkan Club in September in a deal that earned him less than he was getting at Al-Jazira.

That deal was up to the end of the UAE League season.

Though he played 21 games and scored once, Serero's options are shrinking in the Gulf Region having been the second-oldest player at Khorfakkan last season after veteran goalkeeper Ahmed Mahmoud.

A return to the PSL then becomes the next option considering that whatever he could get in the Gulf Region will no longer be anywhere close to what he was on at Al-Jazira.

Several options are being explored locally and will have money matters attached, with the coastal pair of Richards Bay FC and AmaZulu FC having already been identified.

There has been no luck with the Big Three.

'Cream' last played in the PSL back in the 2010/11 season, before moving to Holland, where he spent eight years playing for Ajax Amsterdam and Vitesse, prior to making the switch to the UAE.

In his four years at Al-Jazira, Serero never started a match from the bench with all his 116 appearances coming as starts through winning the league and UAE Super Cup, while getting to play in the FIFA Club World Cup and Asian Champions League.

He last played for Bafana Bafana in November 2019 while Molefi Ntseki was still in charge just months after joining Al-Jazira.
